El despertar de la Fuerza: Disney adquiere Star Wars
Desde el estreno de Star Wars: Episodio III – La Venganza de los Sith (George Lucas, 2005), los fanáticos de la saga no habían tenido noticias de nuevas películas. Tres años después se estrenó la película animada Star Wars: La guerra de los clones (Dave Filoni, 2008), pero no se trató de una continuación a la historia de los Skywalker, sino del inicio de una nueva serie animada que sería transmitida en Cartoon Network. Cuando se hizo el anuncio de que Bob Iger, presidente de The Walt Disney Company, había cerrado un trato de compra con George Lucas, creador de Star Wars, una nueva esperanza nació entre los fanáticos de la saga espacial.
Disney compró la productora de películas Lucasfilm y con ella la franquicia Star Wars, prometiendo expandir la historia principal con nuevas películas. En este trato, George Lucas no tendría poder alguno sobre las nuevas producciones de la marca que él mismo creó, aunque se lo tomaría en cuenta como consultor. Por eso, antes de cerrar la venta, Lucas designó a la productora Kathleen Kennedy como presidente de Lucasfilm, con la intención de que Star Wars mantuviera su esencia creativa en el futuro.
Aunque Lucas incluyó esbozos de lo que sería la continuación de su historia en una nueva trilogía fílmica, Disney y Kennedy optaron por descartar estas ideas y crear una historia propia que, a pesar de sus esfuerzos, no ha tenido el éxito esperado.
El regreso de los Jedi: Star Wars de vuelta en el cine
Luego de que Disney y Kathleen Kennedy tomaran la decisión de contar una historia de Star Wars diferente de la planeada por George Lucas, vino el reto de hacerlo sin perder la esencia de la franquicia. Fue así como llegó Star Wars: Episodio VII – El despertar de la Fuerza (J. J. Abrams, 2015), una película que, aunque revivió exitosamente la franquicia, fue prácticamente un remake de la película original de 1977, utilizando una estructura narrativa idéntica.
El éxito de El despertar de la Fuerza dotó a Kennedy de la seguridad necesaria para convertir a Star Wars en una franquicia anual y se hizo público un calendario de estrenos con proyecciones hasta el 2020. Entre los planes se encontraban los episodios VIII y IX de la saga principal, así como diversos spin-off de personajes populares como Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi y Boba Fett.
A pesar del calendario de Kathleen Kennedy, el bajo rendimiento en taquilla de las siguientes películas de Star Wars amenazaba los planes de Lucasfilm. Aunque El despertar de la Fuerza tuvo una recaudación de más de dos mil millones de dólares, Rogue One: una historia de Star Wars (Gareth Edwards, 2016) recaudó alrededor de mil cincuenta millones de dólares y Star Wars: Episodio VIII – Los últimos Jedi (Rian Johnson, 2017) poco más de mil trescientos millones. Han Solo: una historia de Star Wars (Ron Howard, 2018) fue considerada un fracaso, con una recaudación de tan solo treinta y nueve millones de dólares frente a un presupuesto invertido de doscientos setenta y cinco millones.

Una nueva esperanza: Star Wars en Disney+
Luego del bajo rendimiento de Star Wars en manos de Kennedy, Bob Iger, presidente de Disney, asumió la responsabilidad y afirmó que se debía a al lanzamiento de demasiado contenido en muy poco tiempo. Aunque los proyectos fílmicos posteriores se han puesto en pausa, un par de películas tuvieron que cambiar su formato para poder salir a la luz. Fue así como el proyecto fílmico de Boba Fett se convirtió en la serie El Mandaloriano (Jon Favreau, 2019) y la película sobre Obi-Wan Kenobi en una serie que será liderada por Deborah Chow y cuyo estreno se estima será en 2021, ambas para la plataforma de streaming Disney+.
En el caso de El Mandaloriano, la serie está siendo liderada por Jon Favreau, director de El rey león (2019) y de Iron Man (2008), y una de las mentes creativas detrás del exitoso Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel. Los primeros episodios de la serie fueron dirigidos por Dave Filoni, uno de los creativos de mayor prestigio en Lucasfilm y responsable de la exitosa serie animada Star Wars: La guerra de los clones (2008), quien parece estar siendo entrenado por Favreau en la dirección de producciones en set y con actores. Además, la producción cuenta con el asesoramiento directo de George Lucas. Por otra parte, se ha confirmado que Kevin Feige, la mente maestra a la cabeza de Marvel Studios, está trabajando en su propia película de Star Wars.
Si bien Kathleen Kennedy sigue presidiendo Lucasfilm, Bob Iger ha establecido que él deberá analizar toda decisión importante sobre el futuro de la saga. Es la primera vez que uno de los productores de los grandes estudios que pertenecen a Disney toma una decisión semejante. Parece que los días de Kennedy como creativa de Star Wars están por llegar a su final, y un nuevo grupo de escritores y directores están listos para devolver su grandeza a una de las sagas más importantes en la historia del cine.
