El delicado tema de la película hizo de su producción un evento controversial, pero, más allá de su búsqueda por satirizar el sistema nacionalsocialista y sus pretensiones de superioridad racial, Jojo Rabbit trata temas de gran profundidad ética y moral. La película aborda uno de los períodos más oscuros de la historia universal a través de una mirada infantil, explorando las características del dogmatismo y otros conflictos personales como el autodescubrimiento, el peso de nuestras creencias y el desarrollo de una identidad propia.
La película fue estrenada en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto el 8 de septiembre de 2019, donde ganó el premio mayor, el Grolsch People’s Choice Award. Además, Jojo Rabbit está nominada a varios premios Óscar en las categorías de mejor película, mejor guion adaptado, mejor diseño, mejor diseño de producción, mejor montaje y mejor actriz de reparto para Scarlett Johansson, quien también está nominada a mejor actriz por su actuación en Historia de un matrimonio (2019).
